Christian Suffering
Romans 8:18

Dr. Jonathan T. Phillips, Jr.

As Christian believers we will experience our share of suffering.  In the lesson text Paul encourages us.
Whatever we are facing right now is nothing compared to what we will have on the other side.

Why do we suffer? The sovereignty of God is still sustainable in all situations. God will be God in all things. Our situations do not change Him. He knows and is aware of all circumstances/situations.
1. He “allows” it – to bring out the best
2. He “arranges” it – to develop us
3. He “aligns” it – to keep us from going backward
4. He “develops” us and not “disable” us.
5. He “disciplines” us
6. He “directs” us so glory can be revealed!

God will not allow you to lose. Don’t be attached to your gloom!
Glory is attached to you. You shall receive the crown of life. He has a prepared place for prepared people>

The situation you are in is not your destiny. It has an expiration date, so it will not last. You must go through it so glory can be revealed.

Keep Focus!
Don’t let the devil win!
You will be victorious!
God is in control!

Press Your Way Through
Mark 5:35-34

Dr. Jonathan T. Phillips, Jr.

We have problems, circumstances and situations that seem out of control and we cannot fix ourselves.
In today’s lesson text we find a woman with an issue that she had suffered with for 12 years. This problem is one that she, herself, could not solve. We, as probably this woman had done, have tried to work through our problem, think our way through it, work our way around it, and bring others in to help, but the problem is still there.

So, as this woman in our text, what do we do when we have a problem that we cannot fix?
PRESS YOUR WAY THROUGH IT!
1. Acknowledge your problem
Lesson text: Her problem – Issue of blood
Your problem: you name it

2. Have a plan to follow
Lesson text: This woman had a plan. She had enough faith that she knew if she could not get to HIM, she only needed to touch the HEM of HIM and she would be healed. (Problem solved)
You need to put a plan in place. You need to get to Him, trust Him, or connect with someone who has a connection with Him. You may not be able to get to God, but if you can’t, connect with someone who is in connection. Sometimes you may only need a word from your Pastor, a word from your Bible, or have a song in your heart. When you can’t get to HIM, get to His HEM which is a part of Him. You need a HYMN. A song can/will lift your spirits, encourage you to know that God will fix your problem.

3. Make a Proclamation
Lesson text: This woman said It is I who have touched you.
You need to tell Him, it’s me with the problem that I can’t fix!

God is looking for faith walkers!

Trust in God.
Believe God is going to do just what He said He would do.
Wait on God!

Do not allow your problems or circumstances to make you think God is not listening or don’t hear you. God sees and knows all things.

What are you willing to do or go through to get your healing and blessings?
Lesson text: This woman knew she was not to be in a crowd of people because she was considered unclean. She was willing to press her way through all the bad looks or whatever came her way. She needed to get to Jesus!
Are you willing to press your way through people talking about you, endure people looking at you, study the Word, be faithful in your giving, and faithful in your Bible Class?

Don’t let your problems stop you!
Don’t let your tears stop you!
Don’t let what others say about you stop you!
Trust and believe in God. Your faith will give you your desires and what you need!
Be Healed Be Delivered Be Set Free! Your blessing is greater on the other side than your problems on this side.

Press Your Way Through!

Faith Sees What God Said
Mark 10:46-52

Dr. Jonathan T. Phillips, Jr.

We must have faith to see what God says.

There is no need to pray if you don’t see God doing it. We see the circumstances instead of the solution.

When you are a believer, you walk by faith and live by faith. Faith sees what God says and not the situation. Do not allow sin or tricks of the enemy, to stop your faith from seeing what you believe.

Don’t miss out. Trust God. God promises to open doors of healing and saving. Your faith has to already see it!

The Power Of the Struggle
Luke 22:39-44

Dr. Jonathan T. Phillips

Passion of Christ – His Death, Burial and Resurrection

Palm Sunday
According to Scripture, Jesus called for a colt that had never been ridden. He mounts the colt and goes to Jerusalem. The people laid palm branches at His feet and cried Hosanna, Hosanna, Son of David. (Hosanna means save us) The Jews had been in bondage and was waiting on the Messiah.

Monday
Jesus goes to the Temple. On His way he passed a fig tree that had no figs. The tree was in position but not producing. This is alarming to us in the kingdom. Don’t find yourself in a position and not producing; you suppose to be working for God but just holding a title and not doing the task! Jesus cursed the fig tree!
He continued into the Temple dealing with the religious leaders. He flipped over the money changers and tells them that His House should be the House of Prayer but you have made it a den of thieves. He told them everything was going on in the hosue except prayer.

Tuesday
Jesus comes in contact with the disciples and teach them about the fig tree situation. Literally He teaches them about faith.
He now is being questioned by the religious leaders about whose authority He comes in. He has the mental anguish of proving whose He is without being offensive.
Bible now tells us of His Olivet  disclosure. On Mount Olive He tells them of the pending destruction of Jerusalem, not a poplar subject, but about the end of the age.
The last part of the day He deals with the betrayal of Judas, how he set Him up for 30 pieces of silver.

Wednesday
Nothing is recorded in the scriptures about this day. Theology calls it a Day of Silence.

The real essence of the Passion of Christ is a week that Jesus goes through every vice, circumstance, and situation that we will face in our lives on our Christian walk.

In Luke’s account we see the
Suffering of Christ
Agony in the Garden
Stress of Jesus

By Wednesday Jesus was preparing for the mental struggle that he would have to go through to achieve what He came to do. Yes, He opened blind eyes; made the lame walk; unstopped deaf ears; and raised the dead. But the assignment of Christ was for Him to die.

1. Stress of the struggle
The stress of the mental anguish of Him having to die, of what He had to go through, He prayed. He prayed for Himself and others who had to watch and endure. As He prayed sweat comes from his brow. There was much mental stress that it busted blood vessels in his brow and the blood came streaming down. We talk about the blood still works; the blood shall never lose its power; Jesus endures 39 lashes; and His back being bruised. But do you realize that the first blood shed came when He prayed in the garden?

2. Sacrifice of the Struggle
Jesus realized that if He did not go through to accomplish His assignment, We would not have the opportunity to be reconciled back with the Father. Therefore, He sacrificed Himself!

3. Strength
Everything Jesus endured this week was for everything we will face in life. Even Jesus (human side) needed someone to pray for Him (scriptures tells us the angels came).
You can not make this journey by yourself. You need someone to encourage you in your moments and times of weakness. You want someone who can tell you when you are wrong, then help you heal, help you move further in your life with Christ.
Between your stress and struggle should be FAITH.

In the garden He realized what He had done for others in the course of his 3 1/2 years ministry, He understood the burden of the other side of the cross, and He knew he would be back with His Father.

As we reflect on this Passion Week
He Died, was buried, but rose with all power.

The Father was Glorified!
The Son was Magnified!
The Holy Spirit was Gratified!
Confirmation of the Bible was Ratified!
Church was Edified!
Our Souls were Satisified!

What Is Forgiveness?
Matthew 18:21-26

Dr. Jonathan T. Phillips, Jr.

If we are to have a relationship with God, have our prayers heard and answered, we must do away with SIN and UNFORGIVENESS!

How often should we forgive if someone keeps doing us wrong over and over again? We should have unlimited forgiveness.

If we refuse to forgive, we are showing that we do not trust God to judge justly. Don’t let the past stop you from trusting and having faith in God. If we have no forgiveness we have no fellowship with God and the work of the Lord is hindered with souls at stake.

So, WHAT IS FORGIVENESS:
1. Realizing and admitting wrong doing.
2. Reaffirming godly love. (remembering incident without the pain)
3. Releasing the past (Hurt, pain, frustration/time heals)

The Q-TIP Effect
Quit
Taking
It
Personally

Seek God, release the past, and LET IT GO, so you can move to the next level!

What Hinders God From Answering Our Prayers?
Psalms 32:5

Dr. Jonathan T. Phillips, Jr.

We all want and need to have an effective prayer life. Remember in order to do so we must:
1. Pray in Faith and in the name of Jesus
2. Believe in Him that He hears and answers prayers

What blocks us from getting our prayers answered – SIN and UNFORGIVENESS!
Sin separates/divide us from God!
1. We need to acknowledge/admit we have sinned. Remember you cannot hide from God!
2. We need to confess our sins.
If we are to be effective in our prayer life we must get sin out of the way. God forgives us. We forgive others. Then we have an open avenue to Him. He will hear and answer our prayers.

Remember don’t allow Sin to separate you from God.

The Conditions of Prayer
Mark 11:20-24

Dr. Jonathan T. Phillips, Jr.

Remember, Prayer is vertical (has to do with God) and horizontal (has to do with you)!

Through trials and tribulations in our lives, we realize we need more faith.

We must have Faith in God.
Faith has to have an object and not Faith in Faith. That object is God! What makes faith valuable is the object – God!

Faith has a purpose – that is to move mountains.
When you pray don’t have doubt in your Heart. Whatever your mountains are God can take care of them.
Believe in God’s Authority.

Faith has results.
Don’t doubt; Believe in God and you will get results in your prayers. That result being God allowing you to have what you have requested of Him!

Pray to have Faith in God. He has the capacity to give you what is before Him!

Be Blessed!

The Pattern of Prayer
Luke 11:1-9

Dr. Jonathan T. Phillips, Jr.

Prayer is communication with God. You speak, God listens; God speaks, you listen.

The masses of people that followed Jesus notice His consistent in prayer and the results of His prayer. This led them to ask Jesus to teach them how to pray.

The three steps in the pattern of prayer:
1. Praise – When you say “Our Father” and “Hallowed be they name”, you are honoring, giving praise and setting God apart to focus on Him only. To be effective you need to give God praise!
2. Intercession for others – “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done” – You are acknowledging God’s spiritual reign. You are petitioning for evil to be destroyed and asking God to come so others will receive Him as you have.
3. Request be known – “Forgive us” – Personal need be met day by day. We must forgive if we want forgiveness from God.

Structure prayer is vertical ( all to do with God) and horizontal ( all to do with you).

God will withhold nothing from you if you pray the will of God according to the Word of God.
As believers we need to stay in constant contact with God – Persistent and Consistent PRAYER!

Why Do Good People Suffer?
Romans 8:35-39
Dr. Jonathan T. Phillips, Jr.

Suffering has a permanent effect that can be negative or positive.

Many of us have been hurt and had much pain. But we have a God who has compassion for everyone.

Suffering has attacked all believers. Life can present hard times to all. But through our suffering we learn how to depend on God.

There is more suffering in our world than we realize.
Suffering can be:
1. Physical
2. Emotional
3. Mental
4. Spiritual

The devil has sought to deceive us, but whatever the situation, in all things, we are more than conquerors.

Some believe that all suffering is of God and of sin. Scripture tells us this is not always the case. Sometimes God wants us to go through so we can give Him glory from what we are going through and we can help others.

In our spiritual suffering, in all things, good, bad, frustration, we are more than conquerors! Suffering and pain should draw us closer to God. Remember God is always working behind the scene.

We should seek victory and remember the solution is in the cross.  Jesus suffered on the cross and brought salvation to all!

No suffering, past, present or future, should separate you from God’s love.

Let nothing separate you from the love of God!
